Inhambane Bay in Mozambique Named a Blue Spark for Conservation Efforts thanks to Ocean Revolution, funded by Fondation Ensemble

Marine Conservation Institute announced that Inhambane Bay Community Conservation Network (IBCCN) in Mozambique has been designated as one of six Blue Spark marine protected area collaborations for effective conservation. IBCCN is a system of nine no-take Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The Blue Spark designation reflects significant progress as well as local interest in achieving lasting effective marine protections and earning a Blue Park Award in the future for excellence in marine conservation. Marine Conservation Institute collaborates with Blue Spark partners to plan and improve their MPAs, using Blue Park criteria as the blueprint for a better protected ocean. A Blue Park Award indicates that a marine protected area meets the highest science-based standards for marine biodiversity conservation, and Inhambane Bay Community Conservation Network is on the path towards this distinction.

Sacramento Cabral, Program Director of Ocean Revolution, said, “In Inhambane Bay we balance the protection of our mangrove and seagrass habitats and our communities that depend on them. We are using traditional knowledge from our elders and the most modern marine science to conserve our bay. We hope to serve as a model for other coastal communities of Mozambique and around the world. Using traditional knowledge, modern science and community decision making to protect marine life works. We appreciate the help from Marine Conservation Institute to move our efforts forward; and we thank our elders, village councils, government partners, Ocean Revolution and Bitonga Divers for their great leadership.”

Sarah Hameed, Senior Scientist and Director of the Blue Parks Program said, “The Inhambane Bay Community Conservation Network is a model for community-based marine protections in partnership with the government and it is making important progress in its management planning to sustain its ocean conservation results for generations to come. Individually, Blue Parks and Blue Sparks protect truly unique places, and together they will help safeguard life in the sea.”

Mozambique – An excellent news for marine biodiversity

Marine Megafauna Foundation (MMF), supported by Fondation Ensemble, just announced that Mozambique has passed a law aiming to protect various endangered marine species. Whalesharks, manta-rays as well as mobulas are targeted among other species.

Researches led by the NGO showed the importance of mozambican coast for whale sharks. Human pressures, such as accidental catch in gillnets, halved their global population since the 1980s. In 2013, the NGO reported a 79% decline in whale shark sightings and an 88% decline in reef manta sightings, and these trends continue. Simultaneously, a study led by the NGO showed the economic importance of manta rays and other megafauna to the Mozambican tourism industry: $34 million USD per year of direct economic impact of manta ray tourism, and a projected yearly loss of $16-$25 million USD if Mozambique were to lose manta rays.

In addition to the protection granted to mantas, mobulas, and whale sharks, the law also includes the following new regulations:

  • Fishers must land the full body of any shark caught with fins attached
  • New clearer regulations for Community Fishing Councils
  • A ban on destructive fishing practices on coral, seagrass, or mangroves
  • A ban on the harvesting of live coral
  • Bycatch must be thrown back unless you have prior written permission to use it for research
  • Turtle excluder devices are mandated on industrial and semi-industrial nets

Fondation Ensemble supports various sustainable fishing projects in Mozambique (including the one implemented by MMF):

Former Board Member and Friend,
Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber, passes away

Jean-Louis Servan-Schreiber passed away on November 28th following COVID-19 complications. We were united by a close friendship that stretched back fifty years. With a man such as Jean-Louis, it was a wonderful voyage of adventure, rich in exchanges enlivened by his insatiable curiosity for all living things.
Known to all as an excellent speaker, Jean-Louis was also a very attentive and caring listener. He was not only a remarkable journalist and media entrepreneur but also a passionate man with a big heart, always ready to embark on philanthropic initiatives. Those who benefited − Human Rights Watch, of course, as well as our own Fondation Ensemble, where he was a dedicated Board member for many years − owe him a great debt of gratitude. We are all deeply saddened by his loss.

Fondation Ensemble is signatory of the manifesto launched by the French Coalition of Foundations for the Climate

The French Coalition of Foundations for Climate (Coalition Française des Fondations pour le Climat – CFFC – in French) has been launched on November 18th by the French Foundation Centre.

In the philanthropic sector, this high priority issue is still underconsidered, and it was urgent to improve the commitment of the actors on this subject. The French Coalition of Foundations for Climate is commited to mobilize the whole sector on this topic.

The CFFC shared a manifesto (French version is available here) targeting foundations and endowment funds, for everyone to commit actively and effectively in the fight against causes and effects of climate change. This commitment deals with training, knowledge sharing, innovation, the integration of environmental issues and collective action.

In line with its core values and strategic alignments, Fondation Ensemble was among the first French foundations to join this initiative.

This cause is everyone’s concern. The time for a collective change has come. We have less than 10 years to make a difference and to bring our contribution to the Paris climate agreement.
